In the last year of the World War I, a rebellion of the 71st Austro-Hungarian trench Infantry Regiment broke out, where Slovaks made a greater part of it, along with some Czechs. The soldiers of this regiment were transferred to Kragujevac from Russia after conclusion of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and that was the moment when they rebelled against their officers, Germans and Hungarians. They were trialled before the court-martial and then forty-four soldiers were shot dead on the 21st June 1918. Initiative for raising the monument was taken in 1922 and the monument was formally unveiled on the 28th of September 1924 in presence of members of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and Czech Republic, as well as the families of the deceased. It is assumed that the preserved part of the film, where one can see the monument appearance and the Serbian peasants, who pay respect to the dead soldiers, was filmed on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the shooting.
